Geothermal Heat Pumps

Geothermal heat pumps make use of the stable temperature and large thermal mass of the below ground substrate down to 150m to extract or reject heat from a building’s heating and cooling process. Rather than reject heat to a cooling tower or condenser, geothermal systems exchange energy via water circulated through a network of below ground pipes or directly with a natural source of water. Geothermal heat pumps can therefore access more favourable temperatures than ambient conditions during peak heating and cooling periods.

  • low energy usage – typical 30 to 40 % better than conventional systems
  • it can provide heating and cooling, so it replaces a chiller/boiler combo in a standard set-up
  • no gas or fuel usage. the heat pump only draws electrical power from the facility
  • it can be used for heat recovery for hot water or pool heating during cooling mode
  • little or no maintenance and, except for open-loop systems, no net water usage
  • low noise – no large cooling towers or condensers
  • long system life – 30 to 50 years (some suppliers will guarantee their system for 20yrs)

Unlike conventional systems, Geothermal heat pumps require specialist training and software programs to design correctly. Failure to correctly design can lead to a costly and inefficient system that may operate for only a few years. By contrast, a precisely designed system can work efficiently for 50 years or more and provide a financial return for the owner in less than five years. Enertec is a fully certified CGD consultant and holds several other design accreditations from local and international Heat pump suppliers. Enertec has been involved with this technology since its early development in Australia and maintains an extensive network of industry contacts. This, combined with our many years of experience, means that we can offer your project a high level of services which includes:

  • Feasibility/financial analysis
  • Concept design and optimisation
  • Detail design and project management
