Open-loop systems extract water from the groundwater table or confined aquifer and exchange heat with condenser water via a heat exchanger. A single or multiple extraction and rejection bores are installed to supply the required source water for a heating/cooling equipment.

A pump is installed in a well to extract water from the ground at a stable temperature. After heat is exchanged with the chiller/heat pump, water is returned to the ground via a re-injection bore or other infiltration method.
